LANGILLE - In loving memory of a dear mother and grandmother,
Mabel Viola, who passed away October 26, 2001.
The moment that you died,
Our hearts split right in two;
One side filled with memories
The other died with you.
We often lie awake at night,
When the world is fast asleep;
And take a walk down memory lane,
With tears upon our cheeks.
We hold your light within our hearts
And there you will remain
Our lives go on without you
But it just isn't the same.

Loved and sadly missed
by daughters, Pearl and Helen; son, Ivan; daughter-in-law, Joan;
son-in-law, Wally and grandchildren.

EDDY, Edward D., 77, of Wakefield, R.I., June 28. Avery-Storti, Wakefield.

Edward Eddy, Former Penn State Provost, Dies At 77
6-30-98
University Park, Pa. -- Edward D. "Ted" Eddy, who retired as president of the University of RI (URI) in 1991 and who served as Penn State's provost from 1977 to 1983, died Sunday (June 28) at his home in Wakefield. He was 77.

Throughout his career, Eddy was known as an outspoken and energetic advocate of education. As Penn State's provost, under former University President John W. Oswald, Eddy was the University's chief academic officer. As the deputy president of the University, he worked closely with Oswald and the Board of Trustees on all matters related to governance of the University.

At the announcement of his appointment in August 1977, Oswald characterized Eddy as "an outstanding leader in higher education" and praised his competence and experience. Eddy had "consistently demonstrated an ability to recognize and deal effectively with the many challenges faced by private and public higher education, in Pennsylvania and the nation as well," Oswald said.

When Oswald was ill in 1978, Eddy assumed the duties of University president.

After his retirement from the University of RI, Eddy chaired a group called PROBE -- the Providence Blueprint for Education -- a 33-member panel of educators, business leaders and community activists that led an 18-month investigation into the Providence school system. A former associate of Eddy's at PROBE described him as a man who devoted virtually every day of the last seven years of his life to the school children of Providence.

Before joining Penn State, Eddy had been president of Chatham College in Pittsburgh since 1960. He began his academic career at Cornell University and from 1949 to 1960 served at the University of New Hampshire, as a member of the English faculty, as assistant to the president, and later as provost and vice president. In 1954-55 Eddy was acting president of the University of New Hampshire.

Eddy was the author of many books and professional journal articles on public and private higher education issues, in particular values in education and strengthening liberal arts education. His 1957 book, "Colleges for Our Land and Time: The Land-Grant Idea in American Education," was widely recognized as one of the key works on the land-grant movement in the United States.

Eddy was the recipient of 10 honorary degrees and many other honors and awards. He received a B.A. degree from Cornell University in 1944, a master of theology degree from Yale University in 1946, and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 1956.

A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Eddy was the husband of Mary (Polly) S. Eddy. Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Edward D. Eddy 3rd, of Los Angeles, and David H. Eddy Spicer, of Cambridge, Mass.; two daughters, Mary I. Eddy, of Denver, and Catherine E. Hahn, of Ashland, N.H.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow (July 1) in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center on URI's Kingston campus.

One more addition/correction.

C. A. Eddy Day was Charles A. Eddy Day.

And I don't know what information you're including but George E. H. Day was a Book Dealer.

Fletcher H. Day was a lawyer.

Henry M. Day was a private in Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment Minnesota. He enlisted on 29 April 1861 at age 21.

Thanks for letting me know that it got there okay.

I should let you know that my son (Peter Aline) and daughter (Minnie Jean (Aline) Quiring) are now members of the Eddy Family Association so they and their children should appear in the new book.

I have a new e-mail address: mimaline@verizon.net

The old one will work for a short time.

Regards,
Minnie

In this case go with what Sue sent, evidently I didn't get them updated in my program, but add:

A. Blake Eddy, b. about 1836, d. 1982 in Painesville, Lake Co., OH.

(I found his death in the Painesville Newspaper and haven't sent it to Sue yet. He died of hydrocephalus.)

You should see what the census takers did to this bunch of children, different names each census. We haven't been able to trace them all. Fletcher was in Seattle at least for a while but I couldn't find his death date. So many of them died young.

Thanks for checking.

Gertrude S. Eddy, 103, longtime nurse
By Emma Stickgold, Globe Correspondent | January 9, 2005

Gertrude Sandusky Eddy was a no-nonsense, self-deprecating nurse who took care of her neighbors and friends well into her 90s. For decades she made house calls to patients throughout Greater Boston. At 103, she and her sister, Dorothy McMahon of Lynn, were among the oldest sets of twins in the country.

Mrs. Eddy, known to many as Trudy, died from heart failure Dec. 22 in Youville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Cambridge.

The longtime Belmont resident was "both extremely generous and unsentimental," said a grandson, Jay Sandusky of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Working out of many area hospitals -- including Children's, Massachusetts General, and Lynn Hospital -- Mrs. Eddy dealt with patients in a firm but gentle manner. She was not one to shirk her responsibility to inform patients of their prognosis.

A Beverly native, she and her sister were infants when they went to Prince Edward Island to live with their grandmother. She moved back to Beverly about a decade later and eventually attended Beverly High School. She received her degree in nursing from Salem State College.

Her husband, Albert A. Sandusky, died while she was in her early 30s, at the height of the Depression. In the 1940s, she married Melvin D. Eddy; he died in 1965.

Mrs. Eddy retired from nursing in the mid-1970s, but she was known to nurse many friends and neighbors through illnesses. She often made it a point to bring over her famous blueberry muffins and chicken soup.

Mrs. Eddy used to tell the story of how she was once at home, hunting high and low for cheesecloth to make jam, when she spotted her wedding veil. She used it to complete the culinary project.

"That's the sort of no-nonsense, clever thinking that helped her to live 103 years," Sandusky said.

At her 100th birthday party, it took her three puffs to blow out the 10 candles on her cake -- each one representing 10 years of her life. According to a story in the local newspaper, she exclaimed, "Three puffs -- I'm going to live three more years. Good!"

She did.

In addition to her sister and grandson, Mrs. Eddy leaves another grandson, Mark Sandusky of Miami.

Services were held earlier this week. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody
